Ventilated Rainscreen

Home - Technology - Ventilated Rainscreen

Principle

The ventilated rainscreen technology is a design method for rain protection. It is an open curtain wall other than the closed traditional waterproof walls. Open joints are adopted between panels, which prevents water from entering inside while allowing sufficient air ventilation to drain vapors out. Theoretically, three conditions must be met for water to penetrate cavities in the wall: rainwater, joints and pressure difference that forces rainwater to penetrate. Among them, rainwater and joints are unavoidable, though silica gels may be used. The rainscreen principle prevents rain from entering inside by eliminating pressure difference. The joints between panels are designed to prevent water from penetrating, and at the same time they help achieve pressure balance on both sides of terracotta panels. The ventilated cavity at the back can effectively drain out vapors and protect the supporting and insulating systems at the back.

Advantages

· Dry joint:

The curtain wall system from NBK can effectively prevent rainwater from penetrating cavities in the wall.
· Easy maintenance:

Commonly, cement, silica gel and rubber seals will be vitiated and pollute the surface of curtain wall after exposure to the sun and rain. However, the ventilated rainscreen can protect building from bad weather and keep the surface clean. At the same time, each of the panels can be removed and replaced individually.
· Energy efficient:

By placing the heat-insulating layer out of wind- and water-insulating layers, water will keep evaporating. Air movement in the zero-pressure cavity not only helps dry rainwater, but also cools down the building and relieves the burden of AC system.
